About Pret-a-Pee
Our Philosophy
Toileting is a human necessity, not a luxury.
Public facilities are vanishing across the United Kingdom. Local council budgets have been severely cut over the past decade, resulting in the mass closure of public restrooms. At the same time, private companies—particularly massive coffee and food chains—take up prime high street real estate, yet they increasingly gatekeep their toilets behind keypad locks and paywalls.
We believe these arbitrary barriers shouldn't exist. When public infrastructure fails on a systemic level, it is the moral duty of large, highly profitable corporations occupying our shared civic spaces to provide basic, sanitary facilities to the public without demanding a purchase.
This reality is incredibly punishing for those who need facilities the most. We built Pret-a-Pee to help tourists trying to explore the city without draining their budget, pregnant women who need urgent and frequent access, and remote workers navigating the urban sprawl. The lack of accessible infrastructure severely impacts everyone's ability to simply exist in public spaces.
How Pret-a-Pee Works
Pret-a-Pee crowdsources and shares access to democratize the high street. Built for the people, by the people, our live satellite map enables users in London to easily find nearby restrooms and the keypad codes necessary to open them. It is an act of digital mutual aid.
Community-Driven Data
Because access codes change periodically, we rely entirely on the surrounding community to keep our database fresh. If you buy a coffee or discover a new access code, tap on a location on our map and submit the update so the next person isn't caught out!
Our Future
We are continuously working on adding more independent shops, expanding beyond London, and fighting for true infrastructure accessibility.
